Kawasaki Motors Malaysia Sdn Bhd (KMMSB) ends the year with a bang with the launch of three new models, namely the Ninja ZX-10R, Z125 Pro as well as the brand’s first ever scooter, the J300.
The three bikes were launched at KMMSB’s annual dinner with the presence of Inspector General of Police, Yang Berbahagia Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Khalid Abu Bakar, MP of Tanjung Karang, Yang Berhormat Datuk Seri Noh Omar, and President of Kawasaki Heavy Industries (KHI) Kenji Tomida.
First unveiled in October, the 2016 ZX-10R was developed with input from Kawasaki Racing Team’s two World Superbike champions, Tom Sykes and Jonathan Rea. It’s 998 cc inline-four mill has been redesigned with loads of new lightweight parts. The result is an output of 210 hp at 13,000 rpm and a peak torque of 113.5 Nm at 11,500 rpm.
Power from the engine can be managed in three modes – Low, Middle and Full. These are complemented by the bike’s new electronics, such as Inertia Measurement Unit (IMU), traction control (KTRC), launch control (KLCM) as well as engine braking (KEBC). As for braking, the ZX-10R is equipped with intelligent braking system (KIBS), ABS and Brembo discs.
Aerodynamics have been improved with larger fairings while suspension has been upgraded with Showa Balance Free Fork up front and Showa Balance Free Rear Cushion at the back. The suspension has been developed in WSBK throughout 2014.
The smallest model in the Z family, the Z125 Pro measures 1,700 mm long, 750 mm wide and 1,005 mm tall. The small ‘street fighter’ weights in at just 101 kg and rides on inverted front forks and off-set rear monoshock, with 100/90-12 front tyre and 120/70-12 rear tyre.
The bike shares many key design features with its larger siblings. It has a slim headlight, paired with an underbelly exhaust system and ‘twin Z’ tail lights inspired by the Z800. Other standard equipment include electric starter, as well as an LCD display with fuel gauge, gear indicator, odometer, trip meter and a clock.
The bike is powered by a 125cc air-cooled engine with fuel injection. Mated to a four-speed transmission, the single-cylinder mill puts out 9.5 PS at 8,000 rpm and 9.5 Nm of torque at 6,000 rpm. The Z125 Pro is kitted with disc brakes at both ends, 200 mm up front and 184 mm at the rear.
Lastly, the J300 was developed to entice sport-minded riders looking for a practical daily ride. The scooter inherits some of the Ninja’s styling elements such as the twin headlights. It is heavy at 191kg but with a seat height of just 775 mm, the J300 is promised to be nimble and manageable even when stationery.
Powering the urban scooter is a 299 cc liquid-cooled engine packing 27.2 hp, which is sent to the rear wheel via a Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT). There’s a 37 mm telescopic fork up front and twin shocks with 5-way adjustable preload at the rear. As for braking, the J300 boasts petal discs at both ends.
For rider’s convenience, the J300 has a hydraulic strut to prop-up the seat during opening and an LED light in the storage area, which has a maximum load of 10 kg and is big enough to store a helmet and a briefcase. There’s also a 12V power socket in the glove box and a foldaway cargo hook on the front inner cover.
According to KMMSB, all models are imported (CBU) for now. Tentative sales prices for the bikes are as follows:
- Ninja ZX-10R – Below RM99,000
- Z125 Pro – Below RM9,900
- J300 – Below RM29,800
